If Republicans Would Just Shut up, They Would do Better
72At least that is how Gary Segura, a Stanford University professor sees the Republican lineup appealing to Latino voters. What about the rest of us, are the contenders appealing to the average person in the middle class?
Be forewarned, using quotes can be dangerous. As Newt said to Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren “Any ad which quotes what I said Sunday is a falsehood,”
Herman Cain
Herman Cain
At a campaign stop in Florida, Cain told the crowd that we are Quote: “a nation of crises.” He listed the nation’s many crises, then added
Quote: “we’ve got a moral crisis!”
I wonder if adultery and sexual harassment qualify as moral crises. If they do, well Herman and Newt are adding to this moral breakdown.
Herman Cain speaking to Tea Party crowds at two campaign rallies in Tennessee:
Quote: “It’s going to be 20 feet high. It’s going to have barbed wire on the top. It’s going to be electrified. And there’s going to be a sign on the other side saying, ‘It will kill you!”
Cain later backtracked and said that was just a joke. Maybe it was an inside joke but I don’t get it. What is funny about killing Latinos trying to come in for a better life?
Quote: "We need a leader, not a reader."
Okay but I think we prefer a leader who is informed about the subjects that will demand decisions. Perhaps Herman is just a fan of the Simpsons and wants to be a president like President Schwarzenegger from (Simpsons - The Movie) "I was elected to lead, not to read" President Cain might demand that his daily briefing be presented in cartoon form
Quote: "Michele Bachmann... I'm not going to say it. I'm not going to say it.... Tutti-frutti. I know I’m going to get in trouble”
That seems pretty accurate from my perspective but it does not seem to be very endearing to Bachmann supporters or even women in general.
Quote: "A poet once said, 'Life can be a challenge, life can seem impossible, but it's never easy when there's so much on the line.'" (Aug. 11 Republican debate)
Herman must be a fan of cartoons, this bit of down home poetic wisdom comes from Donna Summer in her song 'The Power of One,'" recorded for Pokémon: The Movie 2000.
Quote: “when they ask me who is the president of Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan I'm going to say, you know, I don't know. Do you know?”( interview with CBN News' David Brody)
Well, yeah, you hardly ever see cartoons about Uzbekistan, but as soon as one comes out. . . .
Quote: “A manly man don't want it piled high with vegetables! He would call that a sissy pizza." (GQ interview)
I don’t know about you but I want to be a “manly man” so from now on I’m piling my pizza high with artery clogging meats. Besides Congress has already declared pizza can be counted as a vegetable.
Simpson Movie
Michele Bachmann
Michele Bachmann
Quote: "Why should I go and do something like that? But the Lord says, 'Be submissive wives; you are to be submissive to your husbands."( 2006 speech at a Megachurch in Minneapolis)
So, will President Bachmann be submissive to her husband when elected? Just exactly who are we voting for? His is good news for men in this country, wives it is time to be submissive, ask your husband for your opinions.
Quote: "I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out: Are they pro-America or anti-America?"
(Calling for a new McCarthyism, Oct. 2008)
As much as I disagree with our group of politicians, I don’t think they are anti-American. When Bachmann is elected President, will we have a purge of elected officials? We should all be very careful about what we say. The First Amendment may only apply to those who say what has been approved by President Bachmann.
Quote: "But we also know that the very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States.
(Speaking at Iowan's for Tax Relief event in January 2011)
I wonder why we fought the Civil War. I always thought that the South seceded from the Union to protect their state’s rights to keep slaves. Now Michelle has taught me that the Founding Fathers ended slavery and John Quincy Adams was a Founding Father at the ripe old age of eight years old. It may be time to destroy your history books. There must be some cartoons around that will clear up any confusion
Quote: "I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out under another, then under another Democrat president, Jimmy Carter.”
Alright! This bit of wisdom completely ignores facts and reality. Gerald Ford was president when Swine Flu broke out. Obviously then Gerald Ford caused Swine Flu and Swine Flu started out as a Republican plot to destroy . . . . What? Don’t tell me that the President isn’t going around starting diseases! The media should investigate!
Rick Perry
Rick Perry
Quote: “Those of you that will be 21 by November the 12th, I ask for your support and your vote. Those of you who won’t be, just work hard, because you are going to inherit this and you’re counting on us to get this right.”
So, in Perry’s world you don’t get to vote for him unless you’re 21. The rest of us can vote when we are 18 but for those who are 21, please wait for November 12 to vote for him. Personally I think I would vote on November 6. but then I don’t think I will vote for Perry. Anyone that wants to vote Republican on November 12 is welcome to try. There are usually dirty tricksters trying to fool people into voting on the wrong day but this may be the first time a candidate offered his own campaign.
Quote: "I will tell you: It's three agencies of government, when I get there, that are gone: Commerce, Education and the -- what's the third one there? Let's see. ... OK. -- I can't. The third one, I can't. Sorry. Oops.
(During Republican Debate)
Why bother to remember the agencies when you plan to close them? Perry must have some strong opinions about the evil agencies of the government. As soon as he remembers, which ones are bad he will close them, lock the doors and shutter the windows. Those agencies are bad because. . . OK . . . Oops!
Quote: "Texas is a unique place. When we came in the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that. You know, my hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention. We've got a great union. There is absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what may come out of that?"
So, Rick Perry wants to be President of the United States of America but if that doesn’t work out, well Texas can always secede from the Union and dissolve the Union. The argument is that Texas is an independent nation and the annexation of Texas was illegal. This is despite the fact that both Texas and the US voted to bring Texas into the union. Texas was also a slave state that joined the Confederacy and seceded from the Union once already. Will we have to fight the Civil War again to keep Texas in the Union? When Texas secedes will they bring back slavery?
Newt Gingrich
Newt Gingrich
Quote: “The idea that a congressman would be tainted by accepting money from private industry or private sources is essentially a socialist argument.
It’s not often that we hear someone come out in favor of bribing Congress but Newt thinks it’s okay. Buy a Congressman today! On sale, Not Cheap!
Quote: “The problem isn’t too little money in political campaigns, but not enough.”
President Obama is expected to raise a billion dollars for his reelection campaign, I wonder if that is enough. Amazing to hear that our politicians want more money but you can buy Newt today if you have enough cash .
Clinton's 1993 budget bill
Quote: “It kill's jobs and leads to a recession, force people off of work and onto unemployment and will actually increase the deficit. Gosh, how wrong can a person be?” Newt Gingrich
After this bill was passed we had a long period of growth ultimately leading to a balanced budget and even a budget surplus. It wasn’t until the Bush tax cuts and two wars that we found ourselves mired in recession. We’re still waiting for those tax cuts to create jobs and growth.
Quote: “The greatest leaders in fighting for an integrated America in the twentieth century were in the Democratic Party. The fact is, it was the liberal wing of the Democratic Party that ended segregation. The fact is that it was Franklin Delano Roosevelt who gave hope to a nation that was in despair and could have slid into dictatorship. And the fact is, every Republican has much to learn from studying what the Democrats did right.”
Kind of hard to argue with Newt there, maybe we should vote for Democrats until Republicans learn this lesson from Newt
Quote: “She isn’t young enough or pretty enough to be the President’s wife.”
Newt was talking about his first wife after divorcing her. Newt must be having his own moral crisis but if he is elected we can enjoy a pretty First Lady. Vote Newt and Vote Pretty!
Quote: “It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods, entrapping children in child laws which are truly stupid…These schools should get rid of unionized janitors, have one master janitor, pay local students to take care of the school.”
Alright! In a time of high unemployment, low growth and a declining standard of living we should fire school janitors and hire children. Can sweatshops be far behind? Imagine children working again in mines and factories. Let’s return to the good old days of the 1890s before welfare and Social Security. If we mix this idea with Bachmann’s idea about no minimum wage we can replace millions of people with underpaid children. What about your job? Can a child do it?
Quote: “Today I have reached a difficult personal decision. I will not be a candidate for Speaker of the 106th Congress”
Seventy five ethics charges were filed against Speaker Gingrich during his term, including claiming tax-exempt status for a college course run for political purposes. While exonerated from 74 of the 75 ethics charges levied against him, the one that he was charged with, he admitted to, and was levied a $300,000. Another moral crisis Newt?
Quote: "There were times when I was praying and when I felt I was doing things that were wrong. But I was still doing them," he said in the interview. "I look back on those as periods of weakness and periods that I'm ... not proud of."
This was Newt’s response to the charge of hypocrisy when he was having an extramarital affair while impeaching Clinton for lying about his affair. I wonder if Newt would have been forthcoming if he was asked about his own sex life.

Hey Chef ,
Let politicians be politicians and be thankful this Thanksgiving season that they don't shut their yaps.........
They remind me of all those "christians" that can''t shut up either , thus betraying their lack of Christian knowledge and behavior......
Keep our fearless wannabe leaders talking !! They have the gift of "foot in mouth" syndrome.....
"Newt", may be the only one to avoid that disease , but he has enough negative baggage for 3 politicians to make up for it...........
So "Keep 'em Talking" and talking and talking...........
Craig R
Excellent and entertaining read.
Excellent Hub ChefsRef. I have a theory. Most of these Republicans make a lot of money on FOX and through other venues. I believe these clowns have contracted with Saturday Night Live to provide them with plenty of late night weekend skit material. You betcha!
And this is the best the GOP has to offer!? A sad state of affairs, litterally. Good one Lee,
Peter
Good hub. Republican- eh!- you can keep them! The Republican motto is do as I say, not as I do!
No, let us have a complete clearance sale!
The nomination is going to Romney. I think I have explained this since October. I see you have failed to mention him in this article.
I competely agree gmwilliams.
JT
And just a moment of reflection...these are our "best" choices? Ahhhhh!!! (runs screaming from the room)
So you made a joke out of all the candidates? All of the above have made astonishing and above average contributions to our society than the normal American. You choose to disrespect them this way? Obama was a missing congressman or senator in the same way he is a bystander to the White House, He has played more golf than the last 3 presidents combined and taken more expensive vacations than the last 4 presidents combined. I would think if you care about your country you would be writing a hub on this moron who has never made a payroll nor ran a company and certainly has proven he can't run this country!
This "moron" has done a far better job of "running " the country than the Daddy financed cheerleader we had ......If there was any "running" the country done by his predecessor it was into the greatest debt proportionately we have ever seen and the longest war we've ever fought....
..In that I agree "Mission Accomplished"..............Besides , what was said in this Hub that is false ?
chefsref,
I would love to teach you guys and gals some things but when you make statements like the country is better off now than when Bush was president then you are saying something that is not factual, unemployment is up, GDP is down, more forclosures, 50 MILLION on welfare up 20%, What signs do you see that things are improving? I see doom and gloom under this president? I see no improvements whatsoever? I see a president who is lazy, doesnt want to work! He said three years ago if he didn't turn it around in 3 years we should get a new president, last night he told a fundraiser sometimes it takes two terms and maybe the president after me? What is up with this? If you support the OWStreeters, Maxine Waters saying the tea party can go straight to hell, and little hoffa saying we will take these sonofabitches out then your on the wrong side of America! Besides when it comes to respect and caring for your country what have you done besides right a shameful hub? Its ok to attack wrongs, its not ok to attack human beings for being human, .......he without sin should throw the first stone!
Mr. American Romance, try and teach yourself how to incorporate some fairness and objectivity in your jaundiced comments and then maybe you might be able to teach others—until then, most people will treat you accordingly.
And btw, there is nothing "romantic" about and angry and dogmatic ideologue disparaging a POTUS, unfairly.
You had better abandon that "glass house" you are residing in and drop those stones in your possession when lecturing about stone casting..........Apparently you are as big a sinner as all others except when you cast facts from "whole cloth", then you are EXCEPTIONAL.......All this blather about one of the lowest forms of human life , "politicians".........Good ones are very hard to find , but the mediocre ones need but speak thus exposing themselves , as Mr romance has ........
I don't know what you think you are doing ?? Facts just confuse the issues , Faux News has proven that !
Why do you think they report with innuendo , gossip , moral outrage and , at times , complete fabrications....
People like Ailes and Murdock thrive on tabloid journalism , they need not be factual when proporting the "news"....The longer they continue this focus on mediocre and biased news coverage the deeper they sink in to the fantasy land of Tabloidism...........
Why do we need fox news to know whats going on? After 3 years anyone would agree this is Obamas situation! That out of the way, none of you addressed facts? Unemployment dropped to 8.6 this week! I bet you are all happy? How many of you smart guys know how many jobs were lost after Obama became president? It's OK I am happy to tell you! Over TWO MILLION! Now you want to blame Bush? Obama turned off the delta in CA, that cost 20,000 jobs, He killed timber in Arizona and New Mexico, at a cost of 12000 jobs! Just those two examples total 32000 jobs and 120,000 Christmas help jobs were created last week that will end in termination in the coming weeks! The pipeline from Canada to Texas would have created thousands of jobs from th top of the country to the bottom! Obama squashed it! Happily he gave Solyndra half a BILLION dollars to creat a lousy 1000 jobs but they closed the doors and took your money! Corzine took 125 BILLION and his business is gone along with your money! And now we hear another green solar panel company is filing bankrupt and taking almost a billion of our money! Hows that hope and change working for ya?
A poll by what university? hahaha, seriously? why didn't that poll just come from Bill Mahers show? would have had the same credibility!
I love to read the rhetoric of the left proposed to be intelligentsia opinion offered to enlighten. It is possible, if anyone takes a stage, to "photoshop" them via picture or speech, to make them sound stupendous or stupid.
An example is your quote,"Now the Republicans want to fire 200 thousand federal employees to pay for an extension of unemployment benefits. Brilliant strategy, we can add that to the 400 thousand vets coming from Iraq to look for jobs and solve it by giving another tax cut to millionaires and blame Obama for the unemployment. Save a piece of that "pie in the sky" for me." I don't believe it was the republicans asking for any of the troops to come home. They still had a job to do and now they will probably have to do it again - with more lives lost and stronger enemies. As for the 200,000 Federal jobs - those really should never count as adding jobs to the economy because they do not contribute to the economy, except when the salaries are spent - which were first paid by taxing or borrowing more funds to pay them. Skip the middleman and either don't tax or don't borrow that money.
The vetting of the current potential candidates is properly recognized as "making sausage." A lot goes into that the general public doesn't like seeing but hopefully the refined final product is pretty good. No such vetting went on with BHO. I challenge anyone to suggest it was so. I can bring up all of any one of the final 3 (maybe 4, not sure about RP) candidate's college transcripts, find high school, college friends, old girl friends (ex-wives), even driving records, and with a little digging, family history, church and business relationships, people who made these people who they are. Can you do the same with BHO? No. Not possible. I'm not talking about a birth certificate that took 3 years to find and disclose, I'm talking about all of the above. Do the "people" have a right to know who he did lines of cocaine with, I mean he wrote this in his own book but we can't learn who it was he was doing coke with? Or is that being prejudiced?
It is a very good thing that we have alternative sources of information now, like Fox News, talk radio (all offerings from Rev. Al's stuff to Rush and Hannity). It is a good thing we have Hub Pages where we can discuss these things openly and freely.
As a hypocrite, you do quite well at "bending the truth" yourself. What "major university" did this supposed study, and compared to what - CBS? MSNBC? I look to Rush to make me ask questions much like I look to my Sunday School teacher to cause me to question why I believe something - not to tell me why I do.
We didn't start the wars we are in, but because of the surge supported only by the Republicans after the democrats had stood on the well and stated the war was lost, did we finish it. But it wasn't the Republicans that decided to give back everything that was fought for, but the democrats.
The tax breaks were needed and worked for what and when they were given. Now - we need even more. But we also need to cut spending on those precious give-a-way programs of entitlements. When you are complaining about the military spending, 20% of the budget, you are looking past the entitlements, 80%. When you need moral superiority, consider fairness means fair to all - not fair to only 10%, 20% or 47% that don't pay any taxes at all. The Fair Tax is a great way to go there. Fair to all. I have never been in any organization where things given to someone had the same value as things where everyone earned a piece. It works. If everyone was contributing - from the least to the most - the country would be flush with cash to do all the bidding required of the Federal government - which really is mostly only paying for the military if you want to get down to that point.
God Bless.
Jeez - cheesy picture of Gingrich there! Looks like an illustration from "The World Around Us" circa 1960. Of course, if his grand scheme to get students to clean the schools were to come to pass, you know who would benefit? Insurance companies. The liability costs would be outrageous!
Great read! Voted up and funny!
We already have sweatshops: Prisons for Profit!
The only way a moon colony would not be a total waste of taxpayer dollars would be if we could relocate Gingrich, the entire GOP and the Mad Tea Party to the lunar surface and then discontinue the program.
Thanks! :)
I am glad the pizza man is gone!
@ Inventurist,
Looking to Rush Limbaugh and your Sunday school teacher to help you think? Strange if you ask me, and also a rather intellectually LAZY idea. Considering neither source has shown themselves to be an adequate source of knowledge and learning in most cases, I would think someone who could read fact checking websites or science books would see that.
But we all remember how Republicans feel about reading. Just ask Sarah Palin!
"10%, 20% or 47% that don't pay any taxes at all"
This is a misinterpretation. Every person who works, receives a social security check, receives unemployment payments, or receives welfare pays PAYROLL taxes. People who earn above a certain amount pay INCOME taxes. There is no adult who receives an income who pays "no taxes at all". That is a misconception spread by the GOP, Mad Tea Party, and Faux News.
Well, I don't care what his answer is. I live well below the poverty level, pay taxes at a higher rate than Santorum, do without health care, and am eligible for no assistance whatsoever due to being self-employed. Faux News, the Mad Tea Party and the GOP can crow about a "welfare state" all they want to. It simply doesn't exist.

How true—although the idealized portrait of Newt is nowhere close to the actual man.
May I sugest this one . . .
